Struck at the legendary Carson City Mint during the height of the American West's silver boom, the 1875-CC Trade Dollar is one of the most desirable issues in the entire Trade Dollar series. Authorized by the Coinage Act of 1873, Trade Dollars were produced specifically to compete with foreign silver coinage in the lucrative Asian trade markets, particularly China, where heavier silver coins were preferred in commercial transactions. Today, Carson City Trade Dollars remain highly sought after due to their Western heritage, limited production, and enduring collector demand.
The obverse, designed by William Barber, depicts Liberty seated upon a bale of merchandise facing east while extending an olive branch toward the Pacific, symbolizing the United States' desire for peaceful international commerce. A ribbon inscribed LIBERTY rests across the base, while thirteen stars surround the seated figure and the date appears below. The reverse features a bold heraldic eagle with outstretched wings grasping arrows and an olive branch beneath the banner E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the weight and fineness inscribed as 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE. The distinctive CC mintmark below the eagle identifies this coin as a product of the famed Carson City Mint in Nevada.
This example is conservatively graded Very Fine 30 (VF30), displaying even circulation wear consistent with the assigned grade. Liberty retains well-defined facial features, substantial detail within the gown, and strong definition throughout the shield and olive branch. On the reverse, the eagle exhibits clear feather detail across the wings and breast, while all legends, denticles, and major design elements remain bold and fully readable. The surfaces display attractive light silver-gray toning with honest circulation marks expected of a mid-grade nineteenth-century silver dollar.
As with all Trade Dollars offered by Redmond Rare Coins, this example has been Sigma Metalytics verified and XRF analyzed, confirming the correct .900 fine silver composition consistent with a genuine United States Trade Dollar. These non-destructive tests provide additional confidence in the coin's authenticity and precious metal content.
