The 1984-Mo Libertad is one of the early issues of Mexico’s iconic bullion series, featuring the Winged Victory standing proudly before the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. The reverse displays Mexico’s national eagle clutching a serpent, because apparently nothing says “national pride” quite like an eagle violently wrestling a snake.
Graded MS-63, this example is fully Mint State with no evidence of circulation wear. Original mint frost remains across the devices, and the fields retain a pleasing cartwheel luster that rotates nicely under light. Unlike many bullion coins that spent decades bouncing around coffee cans, glove boxes and dresser drawers, this one appears to have avoided a career in amateur storage solutions.
The strike is well executed, with strong definition throughout Winged Victory’s feathers, drapery and laurel wreath. The distant volcanic peaks remain crisp, while the legends and date are fully struck and sharply defined. The reverse eagle displays excellent feather detail with bold definition throughout the cactus, serpent and surrounding legend.
As expected for an MS-63 example, the surfaces exhibit several scattered contact marks and light abrasions. These are the result of normal mint handling and bulk storage rather than circulation. Large silver bullion coins have an unfortunate tendency to introduce themselves to one another with the grace of shopping carts in a grocery store parking lot.
The rims are complete and free of significant damage. No wear is evident on the high points, and the surfaces remain original, with attractive luster dominating the overall eye appeal despite the expected bag marks.
Overall, this coin sits comfortably in the Select Uncirculated category. It’s too nice to be called average, not quite pristine enough to make registry-set collectors mortgage the house, and far more attractive than the examples that look like they spent forty years loose in someone’s junk drawer next to drywall screws and dead AA batteries.
